The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve starts further south on our own road. We're at kilometre 8.5 on the Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila, and if you keep driving south you run into it. That makes it the easiest big day out from Tulum Beach Road, as long as you plan for the road past the gate.
What Sian Ka'an is
Sian Ka'an is a UNESCO World Heritage biosphere reserve on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula. UNESCO translates the Mayan name as "Origin of the Sky". Inside are tropical forest, mangroves and marshes, plus a large marine section crossed by a barrier reef. More than 300 bird species live there.
Most people go for the water. The marine life is the main reason to make the trip, and the drive itself is mostly green walls of vegetation.
Punta Allen or Muyil: pick one
There are two ways into the reserve, and you can't reach one from the other.
| Punta Allen | Muyil | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | End of the coastal road south of us | Inland side of the reserve |
| How you get there | Tulum-Boca Paila road, past the reserve gate | Separate entrance, not via our road |
| Road | 42 km of dirt track after the gate | Different route |
| What it's for | Boat trips from the fishing village | The inland side of the reserve |
From us, Punta Allen is the natural choice because you're already on the right road. Muyil means a separate trip.
The road to Punta Allen
Plan on about 2.5 hours from the reserve entrance to Punta Allen, each way. The distance is only 42 km (26 miles), but the track is rough and the average speed is around 17 km/h. Conditions change through the year and get worse after rain.
That's five hours of driving on dirt in one day, before you've stepped onto a boat. Leave early.
Can you drive it in a rental car?
You can, but check first. Most rental companies in the region don't allow their cars into Sian Ka'an, and if you damage a car out there the insurance may not cover it. A 4x4 is the safer choice. If you do drive yourself, go all the way to the village of Punta Allen: that's where the boat cooperatives are. The docks before it are used by tour agencies.
There are no colectivos running to Punta Allen from Tulum in 2026.
Entrance fee
There's a per-person fee at the reserve gate. The amounts we've seen published don't agree with each other, so bring Mexican pesos in cash and check the current price before you go.
Going with a tour
For most people a tour makes more sense than driving. Someone else handles the dirt track, the boat and the timing. Our team coordinates private tours and day trips around the Riviera Maya, Sian Ka'an included. Ask the front desk on WhatsApp at +52 984 320 0701 a day or two ahead.
How we'd plan the day from here
- 8am: breakfast at our restaurant. It's included with every suite, and you'll want it before five hours on a bumpy road.
- Morning: head south on the Tulum-Boca Paila road to the reserve gate.
- Midday: Punta Allen and a boat trip out with one of the cooperatives.
- Afternoon: the long drive back up the track.
- Evening: our restaurant serves until 11pm, so there's time for a shower first. Thursday to Sunday there's fire-grilled fish by the beach.
Pack water, sunscreen, cash and something for mosquitoes. You'll be in mangrove country.
